Reference Electrodes SMES

Stationary Copper-Sulphate Reference Electrodes SMES are used in electrochemical protection systems against corrosion and measure the potentials of the underground metallic structures and facilities. In cathodic protection system the electrodes measure polarized potentials between the buried metallic structure and soil. The electrodes are buried in the soils deep down to the pipelines or other structures and are sure to be below the soil freezing point.

SMES-2VE: Design, Maintenance Recommendations

Reference Electrode SMES 2VE, one of the stationary electrode types, consists of two bodies. The outer body is made from porous ceramics – it creates and supports the electrolytic contacts with the soil at measurements. A measuring copper sulphate filled module with a copper reference electrode is placed inside the outer body. A moisture-holding substance fills the area between the outer and inner bodies of the electrode SMES-2VE. Besides the main electrode, a back-up electrode is built in the device, this is aimed to measure polarization potential. A back-up electrode is placed close to a copper-sulphate electrode, in the lower part of the outer body. Measuring cables are taken out from the back-up and main electrodes. The cable exits are marked for easy maintenance and are equipped with a cable shoe for further connection with a test station KIP. A two-body Electrode SMES 2 is used in the regions with dry climate and at the ambient temperature of from 0 to + 55 °C.
